There’s a lot we still don’t know about Anthropic PBC’s plans for a potentially record-setting initial public offering. The company’s securities filing, which it published on Monday, doesn’t specify exactly how big the IPO will be, though reports have suggested that the artificial intelligence company is seeking a valuation of about $1.5 trillion, which may be down a bit from earlier projections. The prospectus also isn’t entirely clear about how well Anthropic, the maker of the Claude chatbot, is doing at this very moment, leaving blanks in the filing for its third-quarter revenue as well as its “run-rate revenue,” a nonstandard but widely cited figure that boils down an annual projection based on a shorter period.
Assuming the offering goes forward sometime in November, those numbers and others will eventually be added to a document that’s defined by grandiose pronouncements (including a suggestion that investors have a “rare opportunity” to “bring forth an age of miracles”), performative corporate weirdness (we learn, for instance, that prospective employees are given an “anti-sell” to weed out bad fits) and, mostly, a very lengthy list of risks without a clear sense of how those risks would be managed or by whom.
