Bloomberg’s Oct. 6 article, “Ships Take Long Way Around as Drought Snarls Panama Canal,” suggests that a reported increase of more than 70% in maritime traffic through the Strait of Magellan reflects vessels diverting from the Panama Canal because of drought-related operating conditions. Yet the article provides no evidence establishing that connection, and official Panama Canal transit figures do not support that assertion. Moreover, an increase in traffic through one shipping route does not, by itself, demonstrate that vessels are abandoning another.
